Fearing the Romans more than the Lord

John Bible Background

05.30.2015 New Testament: John 11.47–48

To read the Bible in a year, read John 11.47–57 on May 30, In the year of our Lord 2015

After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, many people believed on Jesus, and that frightened the Jewish authorities,

Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, “What shall we do? For this Man works many signs. If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation” (John 11.47–48).

If the Lord was truly with them, they should have known that they had nothing to fear from the Romans. Who is greater? The Romans or the Lord? It is silly to ask such a question, for the two cannot be compared, since the Lord’s power and glory is limitless. And where are the Romans today?
