To read the Bible in a year, read John 18.1–23 on June 9, In the year of our Lord 2015

The Jewish leaders had Jesus arrested and the officers brought Him to the courtyard of the high priest. John managed to get inside, because John knew the high priest, but Peter did not. Therefore, he could not get in, but John helped him,

And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in (John 18.15–16).

Peter said that He would follow Jesus to prison or even to death. The Lord worked so that Peter would be able to keep his promise.

However, he now had to look at the brutal enemy face-to-face, and that was different from speaking to Jesus, who was friendly to Peter.

We can make commitments when no challenge exists, but if we do make a promise, a vow, or a commitment of some kind, the challenge will soon arise to see how strongly we believe what we said.
