What kind of father was David? What did he teach Solomon and his brothers and sisters? Read the first nine chapters of the Book of Proverbs, and Solomon will make frequent reference to what his father taught him. Also, in Psalm 34, David told us what he taught his children,

Come, you children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
Who is the man who desires life,
And loves many days, that he may see good?
Keep your tongue from evil,
And your lips from speaking deceit.
Depart from evil and do good;
Seek peace and pursue it.
The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
And His ears are open to their cry.
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
To cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
(Psalm 34.11–16)

All right, let us listen to David. He teaches us to fear the Lord, and that means:

  • Keeping our tongues from evil
  • Departing from evil
  • Doing good
  • Seeking peace

If that be the way we live, then we will see many good days, and the Lord shall hear our prayers. Sounds like a good way to live to me. By the way, the New Testament quotes this passage. Can you find where it is located?
