People lie because they think it will help them, but the Holy Spirit shows the truth,

Getting treasures by a lying tongue
Is the fleeting fantasy of those who seek death.
(Proverbs 21.6) 

Liars seek to deceive others, but lying also deceives the liar, because the liar thinks he has won. However, in time his lying will expose him for what he is, and will lead him to death.
