Can you ever say, “Enough”?

Proverbs Bible Background

09.16.2015 Old Testament: Pro 30.15–16

To read the Bible in a year, read Proverbs 30–31 on September 16, In the year of our Lord 2015

By Don Ruhl

Recently I communicated with a friend, who said that her state has an insatiable hunger for taxes, and I immediately thought of the following proverb,

The leech has two daughters—
Give and Give!
There are three things that are never satisfied,
Four never say, “Enough!”:
The grave,
The barren womb,
The earth that is not satisfied with water—
And the fire never says, “Enough!”
(Proverbs 30.15–16)

I rewrote the last line for her this way:

The fire—
and the government never says, “Enough!”

The truth is, we could add many other things to the list that the writer of Proverbs 30.15–16 made, including ourselves at some time or another. In other words, have we learned the lesson of contentment?
