10.08.2015 Old Testament: Isa 40.6–8
To read the Bible in a year, read Isaiah 39–40 October 8, In the year of our Lord 2015
By Don Ruhl
Isaiah 40.3–5 prophesied of a voice crying in the wilderness, but then verses 6–8 reveal the voice asking what he should say,
The voice said, “Cry out!”
And he said, “What shall I cry?”
“All flesh is grass,
And all its loveliness is like the flower of the field.
The grass withers, the flower fades,
Because the breath of the Lord blows upon it;
Surely the people are grass.
The grass withers, the flower fades,
But the word of our God stands forever.”
(Isaiah 40.6–8)
Peter quoted this text in one of his letters. Therefore, whether during the days of Isaiah, or during the days of John the Baptist (the fulfillment of this prophecy), or during the days of Peter and Christians today, we have to teach that the body does not last forever, but the word of the Lord does abide forever. Therefore, we should preach the word of God, not our word.
