We do not hear much of it today, but in the first century some elders quit their regular jobs and became full time teachers in the church, and the church compensated them for it,
Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer is worthy of his wages” (1 Timothy 5.17–18).
May the Lord make it happen again, that so many people want to hear the word in our communities, that elders will have to give themselves to full time work in the church.
