Jeremiah Bible Background

10.27.2015 Old Testament: Jer 21.1–2

To read the Bible in a year, read Jeremiah 20–22 on October 27, In the year of our Lord 2015

By Don Ruhl

Wicked King Zedekiah sent messengers to Jeremiah to find out what the Lord would do about the attack of the Babylonians,

The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Melchiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, saying, “Please inquire of the Lord for us, for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon makes war against us. Perhaps the Lord will deal with us according to all His wonderful works, that the king may go away from us” (Jeremiah 21.1–2).

King Zedekiah expected the Lord to back him and to remove the Babylonians, but Zedekiah had no intention of repenting. Why then should the Lord send Babylon away. Zedekiah gave lip service to the Lord by referring to His wonderful works, but the Lord can see through such pretense, and He would not relent concerning Babylon.
