We play tricks on our minds, fooling ourselves that we can dabble in sin, but that we will take it no further, or that we will not suffer the consequences. Listen to what the Lord said to or about Jerusalem,

“Then the Babylonians came to her, into the bed of love,
And they defiled her with their immorality;
So she was defiled by them, and alienated herself from them.
She revealed her harlotry and uncovered her nakedness.
Then I alienated Myself from her,
As I had alienated Myself from her sister.”
(Ezekiel 23.17–18) 

The people of Jerusalem defiled themselves with the Babylonians. Then Jerusalem alienated herself from Babylon, and the Lord alienated Himself from Jerusalem! What a mess Jerusalem made of her spiritual life, and she paid a heavy price for it.
