Peter as an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ, wrote the instructions that Jesus passed along based upon the fact that Peter saw the things of which he wrote. As he said,

For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty (2 Peter 1.16). 

Therefore, you can know that the things revealed in the New Testament, actually happened, and they happened for your benefit.

If anyone denies the teachings and historical record of the New Testament, they must attack the credibility of the apostles as witnesses, which, I believe, cannot be done successfully.
