Man cannot calculate or measure the tolerance and patience of the God of heaven, yet, the time does arrive when He ceases that tolerance and removes the offender. In this case, we speak of Babylon. King Belshazzar knew of the experiences of King Nebuchadnezzar, but did not learn from them. Therefore, Belshazzar used the items from the temple of God to worship false gods, and the true and living God had enough.
Therefore, He sent a fingers to write on a wall, and Belshazzar brought in Daniel to provide the interpretation,
Then the fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written. “And this is the inscription that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. This is the interpretation of each word. Mene: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; Tekel: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; Peres: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians” (Daniel 5.24–28).
So ended that very night one of Earth’s greatest kingdoms. However, regardless of a nation’s greatness, if that nation refuses to repent of offending the God of heaven, then the days of that nation are numbered.
