Laban, the uncle of Jacob, treated his nephew well initially, but when he saw that Jacob was a good worker and brought prosperity, Laban took advantage of his own nephew. Therefore, Jacob fled with his family,

And Laban was told on the third day that Jacob had fled. Then he took his brethren with him and pursued him for seven days’ journey, and he overtook him in the mountains of Gilead (Genesis 31.22–23).

Were Laban’s motives pure, or did he fear not doing as well with Jacob gone? Whatever the motive, Laban treated his nephew, who was then his son-in-law, poorly. Laban paid for it in the removal of his daughters and grandchildren.
