Sevenfold punishment for sin by means of wild beasts

Leviticus Bible Background

02.18.2016 Old Testament: Lev 26.21–22

To read the Bible in a year, read Leviticus 26–27 on February 18, In the year of our Lord 2016

By Don Ruhl

The Lord promised blessings upon Israel for their obedience and He promised to punish them for their disobedience. He stated that in some cases, He would use wild beasts,

“Then, if you walk contrary to Me, and are not willing to obey Me, I will bring on you seven times more plagues, according to your sins. I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, destroy your livestock, and make you few in number; and your highways shall be desolate” (Leviticus 26.21–22).

Although plenty of people would dwell in the land, the Lord would send such ferocious beasts and great numbers of them, that they would:

Rob Israelites of their children
Destroy their livestock
Dwindle their population
Make the highways desolate

It just sounds like a good idea in the first place to obey the Lord, because He still works with nations, rewarding them and punishing them according to their works.
