Can the Lord do what man cannot conceive of doing?

Numbers Bible Background

02.24.2016 New Testament: Num 11.21–23

To read the Bible in a year, read Numbers 11–13 on February 24, In the year of our Lord 2016

By Don Ruhl

The Lord told Moses that He would give Israel enough meat to eat for a solid month to the point that they would get sick of it. Moses looked around at the numbers of people living in the wilderness, and he questioned how that could be done,

And Moses said, “The people whom I am among are six hundred thousand men on foot; yet You have said, ‘I will give them meat, that they may eat for a whole month.’ Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to provide enough for them? Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to provide enough for them?” And the LORD said to Moses, “Has the LORD’S arm been shortened? Now you shall see whether what I say will happen to you or not” (Numbers 11.21–23).

If the Lord can move 600,000 male warriors out of one nation into a vast wilderness, and provide food and water for them every day, can He also give them meat to eat for a month?

For a moment, Moses lost sight of the power of the Lord, but I hesitate to criticize this man of God, for he had already done so much and the sheer number of people just astounded him.

However, he learned quickly what the Lord can do.

Questions:

  • If the number Moses referred to only included the men between the ages of 20 and 50, and excluding the tribe of Levi, how many people do you think came out of Egypt?
  • Is anything too hard for the Lord?
