Seeking to destroy a popular teacher

Matthew Bible Background

To read the Bible in a year, read Mark 11.1–19 on March 6, In the year of our Lord 2016

By Don Ruhl

After Jesus revealed the evil of the Jewish leaders who allowed the house of God to become a den of thieves, they wanted to destroy Him,

And the scribes and chief priests heard it and sought how they might destroy Him; for they feared Him, because all the people were astonished at His teaching (Mark 11.18).

Later, Pilate would see the envy of the Jewish leaders, and here you see it in force. Jesus astonished the people in a good way with His teaching, something the scribes and chief priests had not done.

Rather than learn from Him, they decided to get rid of Him. That astonishes me. They envied Him enough to seek His destruction!

Questions:

  • Has someone become more popular than you after you have worked so hard to help people?
  • Does God send newcomers to awaken us that we might see that we have stuck to a boring routine?
