Levi may have been a tax collector, but he showed hospitality

The scribes and Pharisees rejected people like Levi (we know him better as Matthew), because he was a tax collector, a Jew working for the occupying force of the Romans, but much to his credit he showed hospitality,

Then Levi gave Him a great feast in his own house. And there were a great number of tax collectors and others who sat down with them (Luke 5.29).

He practiced what has become a neglected art. Do you think to yourself, that if Jesus came to town, you would do what Levi did? Please observe that Levi did not invite only Jesus, but other people as well. Why can you not invite the “others”? Why does Jesus have to be present before you will do it?

Questions:

  • Do you practice hospitality in your home?
  • If not, why not?
  • If you have an unbelieving spouse, do you seek to show hospitality in other ways?
  • Is showing hospitality in your home, the only way to practice hospitality?
