Unfortunately some Christians view singing as merely a time-filler before getting to the meat of the service, the sermon. However, observe the importance of singers at the temple,

These are the singers, heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites, who lodged in the chambers, and were free from other duties; for they were employed in that work day and night. These heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites were heads throughout their generations. They dwelt at Jerusalem (1 Chronicles 9.33–34).

The work of the singers played such a significant part, that they had freedom from other duties. Singing properly takes much learning and much practice. Moreover, for a singer to give him or herself totally to the music, expressing the truth and the emotions of the song, the singer cannot have distractions, but has to go completely into the music.

Questions:

  • What do you think of singing in the worship service?
  • Have you tried to learn anything about music?
  • If you do not know the meaning of a song, do you search out its meaning?
