Have you gone too far in generalizing about people?

Psalms Bible Background

08.20.2016 Old Testament: Psa 116.11

To read the Bible in a year, read Psalms 116–118 on August 20, In the year of our Lord 2016

By Don Ruhl

Have you painted people with a broad brush? Have you declared that all politicians are corrupt? Have you concluded that a certain color of people are evil? The psalmist made a generalization about people, and then realized that he was wrong, but observe why he made his original statement,

I said in my haste,
“All men are liars.”
(Psalm 116.11)

In haste, he judged all men as liars. He had not given enough time to think about it. He had too small a sampling. He had an experience or perhaps several experiences that led him to make a conclusion about all people.

The only one who can make such a declaration is the One who sits in the heavens and sees all that we do.

  1. Yes I have done so, and it was out of being taught or seeing such things done by a certain group of people. Now, I would say I make generalizations dependent upon the individual and their actions. I also do it to self. Is that bad?
