Matthew Bible Background

03.15.2017 – New Testament: Mark 15.16

To read the Bible in a year, read Mark 15.1–26 on March 15, In the year of our Lord 2017

By Don Ruhl

Picture yourself as Jesus and the Jewish authorities have already arrested you, beaten you, and otherwise humiliated you. Then the Jewish authorities turn you over to the Romans who hate you because you are a Jew, and now they have open permission from the Jewish authorities to harm you anyway they desire. This happens next,

Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison (Mark 15.16).

You are all alone with soldiers who want to hurt you. They take you into a room. What shall they do to you in there? The anticipation alone would destroy me.

Yet, Jesus went through it all, knowing what the Romans would do to Him! Why did He do it?

Questions:

  • Do you find it difficult to picture the suffering of Christ?
  • Where would we be without His suffering?
