05.02.2017 – New Testament: Luke 23.17
To read the Bible in a year, read Luke 23.1–26 on May 2, In the year of our Lord 2017
By Don Ruhl
The Romans conquered a nation, then worked with that nation to have peace in their land. One of the kooky things the Romans did was to release a prisoner during one of the Jew’s annual feasts. Believing Jesus to be innocent, Pilate wanted to release Him in accordance with this custom,
…for it was necessary for him to release one to them at the feast (Luke 23.17).
However, the Jews would have none of it. They wanted Jesus dead and they wanted Him to die in the worse possible way, death by crucifixion. Instead Pilate released another man at their request, a man who had committed murder.
The Jews wanted to kill the Creator of life and to have released a taker of life.
Questions:
- Why did Jesus allow Himself to go through such mockery?
- Why could the leaders not see the truth about Jesus?
