David reigned as king of Israel for a long time. He made some bad decisions, but he also glorified God, and for the most part, the Bible speaks highly of his reign. Concerning its length, the Bible says,

David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah (2 Samuel 5.4–5).

At the beginning of David’s reign, a son of Saul reigned over Israel, but for only two years and eventually the whole nation submitted itself to David. In America, our president serves for four years, and if the voters reelect him, he will serve another four years, but then that is it. Therefore, to think of David reigning for 40 years amazes us.
