The bold preaching of John the Baptist made some people think he might be the Messiah, but he pointed people away from himself and to the true Messiah,

John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me’” (John 1.15).

John performed as the forerunner to Jesus, hence Jesus came after John, but the reason John became the forerunner of Jesus is that the Father preferred Jesus over John (and truly over all people), because Jesus existed before John existed, for Jesus has always been.

Questions:

  • What does Jesus mean to you?
  • Do you live your life in anticipation of people seeing Jesus in you?
