You undoubtedly know the Golden Text of the Bible, John 3.16. However, what did Jesus say just before He spoke those words?

“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3.14–15).

Then He gave that famous sentence that we label as John 3.16. God would give His Son for the world, but the way the Father would do it was by having His Son lifted up, not in the sense of men holding Him up for praise, but as Moses lifted a serpent in the wilderness. Jesus would be lifted upon a device that would hold Him up above the ground, which was a way of prophesying of the crucifixion.

Questions:

  • According to John 3.14–15 why would the Son of Man be lifted up?
  • Have you looked to the Son of Man for salvation?
