12.31.2018 – Old Testament: Mal 2.10–12
To read the Bible in a year, read Malachi on December 31, In the year of our Lord Christ 2018
By Don Ruhl
In one sense Judah learned much from Babylonian captivity, but in another sense they did not learn much. The Lord had to have His prophet say to the people:
Have we not all one Father?
Has not one God created us?
Why do we deal treacherously with one another
By profaning the covenant of the fathers?
Judah has dealt treacherously,
And an abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem,
For Judah has profaned
The LORD’S holy institution which He loves:
He has married the daughter of a foreign god.
May the LORD cut off from the tents of Jacob
The man who does this, being awake and aware,
Yet who brings an offering to the LORD of hosts!
(Malachi 2.10–12)
God created Israel, but some of His people married the daughter of a foreign god, thereby showing treachery to the Lord. Such a person would be cut off from Israel because although marrying the daughter of a foreign god, they would also make offerings to Yahweh God!
Questions:
- Can we serve Yahweh God and an idol?
- Why would a child of God marry an idolater?
