The world’s greatest prayer

Luke Bible Background

05.03.2019 New Testament: Luke 23.34

To read the Bible in a year, read Luke 23.27–38 on May 3, In the year of our Lord 2019

By Don Ruhl

The world forsook him and rejected him. His own wanted him dead. His closest friends stayed away when he needed them the most. Exceedingly sinful men demanded that the government torture him to death. The governing authorities submitted to the horrific demand. Yet, he did this,

Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots.

– Luke 23.34

How can anyone surpass such a prayer. While men tortured Him joyfully, He prayed for their forgiveness.

Questions:

  • What kind of heart would ask the Father to forgive one’s own executioners?
  • Have you made any attempt to have that kind of heart?
