A powerful army to the north of Israel struck fear into the hearts of the children of Israel. The Lord would use that northern power to strike Israel, but only in a measured way:

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD of hosts: “O My people, who dwell in Zion, do not be afraid of the Assyrian. He shall strike you with a rod and lift up his staff against you, in the manner of Egypt. For yet a very little while and the indignation will cease, as will My anger in their destruction.”

– Isaiah 10.24–25

Israel had sinned and failed to repent, so the Lord had to punish them, but He would not annihilate them. He would use Assyria to do His work of punishment, but later He would turn His anger away from Israel and direct it at Assyria and make a full end of them.

Questions:

• Does love mean never punishing?
• Does punishing mean love has left?
