Be strong even if the economy is bad

Zechariah Bible Background

Old Testament: Zec 8.9–10

To read the Bible in a year, read Zechariah 7–9 on December 28, In the year of our Lord Christ 2019

By Don Ruhl

One problem that the Jews had when they sought to rebuild the temple after returning from Babylon was a bad economy. However, they did not realize that the Lord had cursed their economy because they first neglected His temple. Therefore, He encouraged them to get busy working:

Thus says the LORD of hosts:
“Let your hands be strong,
You who have been hearing in these days
These words by the mouth of the prophets,
Who spoke in the day the foundation was laid
For the house of the LORD of hosts,
That the temple might be built.
For before these days
There were no wages for man nor any hire for beast;
There was no peace from the enemy for whoever went out or came in;
For I set all men, everyone, against his neighbor.”

– Zechariah 8.9–10

He wanted them to know why their economy had failed and that it was about to get good again as they turned their attention back to the spiritual things of life, primarily by rebuilding the temple.

Questions:

  • Where does the Lord and His church come in your thinking?
  • Do you believe that if you take care of the things of the Lord that He will take care of your things?
