When a blossom is like dust

Old Testament: Isa 5.24–25

To read the Bible in a year, read Isaiah 4–6 on September 25, In the year of our Lord Christ 2023

By Don Ruhl

Israel had fallen badly into sin. That led them to call evil good, and good evil, to put darkness for light, and light for darkness, and they continued like that, reversing everything in life from how God declares things to how man declares things.

Therefore, they would experience the same from the Lord. Their good things, he would turn into bad things, as Isaiah said: “Therefore, as the fire devours the stubble, and the flame consumes the chaff, so their root will be as rottenness, and their blossom will ascend like dust; because they have rejected the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.”

The prophet continued to explain how they would suffer for rejecting the Lord’s law and despising his word: “Therefore the anger of the LORD is aroused against His people; he has stretched out His hand against them and stricken them, and the hills trembled. Their carcasses were as refuse in the midst of the streets. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still” (Isaiah 5.24–25).

Perhaps we should look into our own lives, the life of our congregation, and the life of our nation to see if we have suffered the same things, and if so, have we rejected and despised the Lord’s word.

  • What do you use to measure the success of your life?
  • What do you use to measure the success of your nation?
