Who is the discerning and wise one?

Old Testament: Gen 41.39

To read the Bible in a year, read Genesis 41 on January 17, In the year of our Lord Christ 2024

By Don Ruhl

Joseph revealed to Pharaoh the meaning and application of his dreams. Additionally, Joseph advised Pharaoh to put someone in charge to make sure that Egypt could survive the terrible years of famine that would arrive after seven years of plenty.

Pharaoh could see the wisdom of the words of Joseph and said so to this servants. Then Moses wrote: “Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘Inasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is no one as discerning and wise as you’” (Genesis 41.39).

In the eyes of Pharaoh, Joseph was either the only one qualified or by far the best qualified, and put him in charge of Egypt’s future!

Pharaoh could have put a family member in charge, or an old friend, but did none of those, and went with the man who demonstrated God’s wisdom.

Questions:

  • Do you favor family and friends over more qualified people?
  • How do you determine who is discerning and wise?
