Standing by the Cross of Jesus

New Testament: John 19.25

To read the Bible in a year, read John 19.23–42 on June 12, In the year of our Lord Christ 2024

By Don Ruhl

Four women watched the horrible sight of Jesus being crucified on a Roman cross: “Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene” (John 19:25).

His mother and aunt, and two other women who had followed Jesus devoutly and adored him, were at the crucifixion. They may have fully understood who Jesus was, and if they did, what did they think and feel on that day?

They may have wanted to do something about it, but what could they do against Roman soldiers? They may have also understood that the crucifixion had to take place. And so they watched silently, but with deep grief.

What would you have done that day if you had witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus Christ?

Questions from today’s reading and devotional:

  • Whom did the Jews claim as their king?
  • How was it that Pilate had power against Jesus?
