When someone close to you reproaches you

Old Testament: Psa 55.12–14

To read the Bible in a year, read Psalms 53–55 on July 28, In the year of our Lord Christ 2024

By Don Ruhl

A reproach always hurts, but when it comes from someone who used to be close to you, it hurts even more, as David noted:

For it is not an enemy who reproaches me;
Then I could bear it.
Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me;
Then I could hide from him.
But it was you, a man my equal,
My companion and my acquaintance.
We took sweet counsel together,
And walked to the house of God in the throng.

– Psalm 55.12–14

We do not even want our enemies criticizing us, but when they do, and they will, we can deal with it more easily because they have always been against us. There was always a barrier between the enemy and us.

However, when it comes from someone close to our hearts, then we bear it with difficulty.

During those times, we have to get even closer to the Lord than we had been before, because he will enable us to bear anything from anyone.

Questions:

  • What had the person done in this psalm against the psalmist?
  • What had David considered him previously?
