What it means to have faith

New Testament: Rom 4.19

To read the Bible in a year, read Romans 4 on August 3, In the year of our Lord Christ 2024

By Don Ruhl

Abraham is our father in the spirit (Romans 4.1), because of his faith. If we have his faith, we are his spiritual descendants.

What kind of faith did he have? Listen to Paul describe it a little: “And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb” (Romans 4.19).

Starting when he was 75, God told him that he would have a son, although he did not have any at that time. About two and a half decades go by and still no son, but when he was 99, God told him that the next year, he would have a son.

Abraham believed what God said, in spite of his age and the age of his wife, who was 10 years younger.

To Abraham, if God said that he would have a son, then he would have a son, regardless of how impossible it might seem to man.

Questions from today’s reading and devotional:

  • Do you have the kind of faith that Abraham had?
  • If not, why not?
  • What can you do to increase your faith?
