What are you building on the foundation?

New Testament: 1Co 3.12–13

To read the Bible in a year, read First Corinthians 3 on August 21, In the year of our Lord Christ 2024

Paul had written that the only foundation for us to lay is Jesus Christ. However, as we teach others, we are building on that foundation, referring to the kinds of disciples that result.

Paul said: “Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is” (1 Corinthians 3.12–13).

The different materials represent the different kinds of disciples. They will all be tried by fire, that is, suffering and persecution. Some will survive and some will not.

If you are the teacher and you have made Jesus Christ the foundation of your teaching, and then someone falls away, that is not your fault, although you obviously suffer the loss of that person.

Just be sure to make Jesus Christ the foundation of your teaching.

Questions:

  • How does it affect you when you see people you have taught grow in Christ?
  • How does it affect you when you see people you have taught fall away?
