How do you treat sin in others?

Old Testament: Pro 17.9

By Don Ruhl

Yes, we should rebuke our brother if he sins, but what is our goal? Do we want to get his sin out of the way, out of our minds, or do we wish to harp on it until our brother repents?

Solomon gave this insight: “He who covers a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates friends” (Proverbs 17.9). (The ASV has, “he that harpeth on a matter separateth chief friends.)

Are you wanting to cover his sin or are you going to keep harping on it as though you have never sinned? Are you out to destroy your brother?

Whatever our motive is, it will show up in how we treat our brother.

Questions:

  • How do you want others to treat sin in you?
  • Have you damaged a friendship?
  • If so, what do you need to do to fix it?
