How do we want preachers to appeal to us? Do we want them to use guilt to induce us to do the right thing, or would we prefer gentle persuasion? I want the latter.
Listen to the manner in which Paul approached the Corinthians: “Now I, Paul, myself am pleading with you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—who in presence am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you” (Second Corinthians 10.1).
While with them, Paul was lowly, because they listened to him and eagerly did the Lord’s will. However, away from them, they lost that zeal for doing the Lord’s will, and then Paul had to be bold.
The way he wanted to appeal to them was in the meekness and gentleness of Christ, rather than as the commanding and demanding apostle.
Preachers approach us dependent upon how we live and the attitude of our hearts.
Questions:
- What does your life and your attitude dictate a preacher has to do to get through to you?
- How do you wish to be approached?
