Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Old Testament: Song 4.1–5

To read the Bible in a year, read Song of Solomon 4–5 on September 22, In the year of our Lord Christ 2024

By Don Ruhl

They say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That is a message from the Song of Solomon 4.1–5.

Was the bride of Solomon perfect in appearance? That is possible. It is also possible that she was not, yet, when you read these five verses, that is not the picture you get from him. He loved her and saw nothing but good in her. Listen to him picture her:

Behold, you are fair, my love!
Behold, you are fair!
You have dove’s eyes behind your veil.
Your hair is like…
Your teeth are like…
Your lips are like…
Your neck is like…
Your two breasts are like…

– Song 4.1–5

Those first two lines give away Solomon’s heart. She was his love and so all he could see was the perfect beauty of his beloved. He spoke of her eyes, hair, teeth, lips, mouth, temples, neck, and breasts.

She did not necessarily see herself in such perfection of beauty, but his love for her moved him to see her as his. He was goo-goo eyed.
