The purpose of the Law of Moses

New Testament: Gal 3.19

To read the Bible in a year, read Galatians 3 on September 25, In the year of our Lord Christ 2024

By Don Ruhl

As you read through Genesis, you come to the part when God selected Abraham, that through him the Lord would bless all the families of the earth (Genesis 12.3), and all the nations of the earth (Genesis 22.18).

Later, you get into the Books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, where the Lord gave the Law to Israel. Why did he give them the Law, since they already had the promise?

Paul explained why in his letter to the Galatians: “What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator” Galatians 3.19).

The blessing through Abraham has to do with eliminating our sin (Acts 3.25–26). Therefore, a law had to be put into place to teach us about the heinousness of sin and what is required to remove it.
