How Jesse would bless the world

Old Testament: Isa 11.1–2

To read the Bible in a year, read Isaiah 10–12 on September 27, In the year of our Lord Christ 2024

By Don Ruhl

David was often referred to as the son of Jesse, perhaps showing that Jesse was very much responsible for the man that David turned out to be.

Moreover, a descendant of David’s would be even more wonderful than David, for he would be the Chosen One, the Messiah, the Christ, and this prophecy was made about him: “There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots. The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD” (Isaiah 11.1–2).

David had been a great blessing to Israel and the world, and another son of Jesse would come who would be even greater.

That son of Jesse has arrived, and we know him as Jesus of Nazareth.

Questions from today’s reading and devotional:

  • What kind of Spirit would rest upon the Messiah?
  • Is it right to fear the Lord?
