Why Jesus loved the church

New Testament: Eph 5.25–27

To read the Bible in a year, read Ephesians 5 on October 3, In the year of our Lord Christ 2024

By Don Ruhl

Paul taught husbands how they ought to love their wives, and he used Jesus as an example of how he loved the church and why he loved the church: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5.25–27).

Jesus loved the church by giving himself for her. He so loved her for three reasons:

  • That He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word
  • That He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing
  • That she should be holy and without blemish

Likewise, let husbands love their wives by giving themselves for their wives that their wives might be sanctified, glorious, and holy.

Questions:

  • Would you listen to Paul teach about marriage if he had come to your congregation?
  • To what extent did Jesus give himself for the church?
