The power of a dry wind

Old Testament: Jer 4.11–12

To read the Bible in a year, read Jeremiah 3–4 on October 20, In the year of our Lord Christ 2024

By Don Ruhl

The Lord sent the prophet Jeremiah to the nation of Judah that they might know of their sin, and be aware that if they did not repent, he would send judgment upon them.

He pictured this judgment in many ways, including that of a dry wind: “At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, ‘A dry wind of the desolate heights blows in the wilderness toward the daughter of My people—not to fan or to cleanse—a wind too strong for these will come for Me; now I will also speak judgment against them’” (Jeremiah 4.11–12).

God, through wind, blesses the earth, but in this case, it was a dry wind, not bringing any moisture, nor cleansing the land of anything, but it would set the stage for destruction, such as a fire might do.

I grew up in Southern California where there are the “Santa Ana,” winds. Super hot and dry winds that help to create hazardous conditions.

Judah was going to experience something awful when the Babylonians attacked.

Questions:

  • Have you experienced hot, dry wind?
  • Do the winds have a name where you live?
