People think that they want God to appear, but…

New Testament: Hebrews 12.20-21

To read the Bible in a year, read Hebrews 12 on November 17, In the year of our Lord Christ 2024

By Don Ruhl

There are people today who think that they want to see the Lord, and when they do, then they will believe.

However, seeing is not what most people imagine. When Israel simply heard the voice of God from Mount Sinai, they feared. They did not want to hear the voice anymore and wanted Moses to have the contact with God.

There was a severe penalty even for animals who touched the mountain: “For they could not endure what was commanded: ‘And if so much as a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned or shot with an arrow.’”

In fact, the sight and sound of God was even frightening for the great man Moses: “And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, ‘I am exceedingly afraid and trembling’” (Hebrews 12.20-21).

Let us be glad that for now, the Lord keeps his face hidden, but let us rejoice that when we enter heaven, seeing the Lord’s face then will be a blessed experience.

Questions from today’s reading and devotional:

  • Who are the great cloud of witnesses in verse 1?
  • To what mountain have we in the church come?
