New Testament: Matt 14.6–8
To read the Bible in a year, read Matthew 14.1–21 on January 19, In the year of our Lord Christ 2025
By Don Ruhl
Herod both disliked and liked John the Baptist, leading Herod to want to kill John, but not really wanting to kill him.
Someone else did not like John and she persuaded Herod to kill John: “But when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod. Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, ‘Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter’” (Matthew 14.6–8).
Let us not make wide-open promises to people, for they may ask something that we either cannot or do not want to fulfill.
Think before promising.
Questions:
- What was the relationship between Herod and the daughter of Herodias?
- Do you keep your promises?
