Cities and Suburbs

Old Testament: Joshua 19.10–16

To read the Bible in a year, read Joshua 19–20 on March 27, In the year of our Lord Christ 2025

Joshua 19.10–16 gives the border of the land that Zebulun inherited.

Something that caught my eye was this: “Included were Kattath, Nahallal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem: twelve cities with their villages. This was the inheritance of the children of Zebulun according to their families, these cities with their villages” (Joshua 19.15–16).

Look at a map of the land Israel inherited and it is very small in comparison to other nations, yet, many cities dotted the land, and many of those cities had villages. To me, it looks like cities and their suburbs. In other words, many people inhabited the land of Canaan before Israel’s arrival.

While the Canaanites had sinned greatly, so that the Lord decided to remove them from the land, yet, see a land well-developed. Do not see cavemen. They were sophisticated. However, that large sophisticated population that included giants, did not stop the Lord from removing them.

Only righteousness preserves a nation (Proverbs 14.34).

Questions from today’s reading and devotional:

  • To what three continents does the Land of Israel provide access?
  • How does your nation compare to the size of ancient Israel?
