Jesus was criticized because his disciples did not fast. He said to his critics: “And He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them?” (Luke 5.34). 

Even as we do not fast at a wedding, so his disciples did not fast while he was with them. That implied that they would fast later.
