Sometimes we can help better elsewhere

Old Testament: 2 Samuel 15.27–29

To read the Bible in a year, read Second Samuel 15–16 on April 26, In the year of our Lord Christ 2025

By Don Ruhl

As the son of David sought to attack him, David’s friends wanted to be with him, but in some cases, it was better that they stayed behind: “The king also said to Zadok the priest, ‘Are you not a seer? Return to the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. See, I will wait in the plains of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.’ Therefore Zadok and Abiathar carried the ark of God back to Jerusalem. And they remained there” (2 Samuel 15.27–29).

Because of the work that those men did and their relationship to David and the rest of Israel, he believed that they could serve his interests and that of Israel’s better if they stayed in Jerusalem.

They did not object, but had learned that David was a wise man and so they would do what he said to do.

They were men of power and authority, but they also knew how to take assignments.

  • Do you serve in the kingdom for its interests or are you about the kingdom serving your interests?
