David knew when to listen

Old Testament: 2 Samuel 18.2–4

David was the king. He gave the orders and the assignments. He ran the nation, and he ran the military.

However, on one occasion at least, his men did not want him to go out with the army, and he listened to them: “…the king said to the people, ‘I also will surely go out with you myself.’ But the people answered, ‘You shall not go out! For if we flee away, they will not care about us; nor if half of us die, will they care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us now. For you are now more help to us in the city.’ Then the king said to them, ‘Whatever seems best to you I will do.’ So the king stood beside the gate, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands” (2 Samuel 18.2–4).

That is one of the many reasons that God loved David, and why I think that we do also.

Questions from today’s reading and devotional:

  • Are you able to humble yourself and take orders or assignments from others?
  • Why was David worth 10,000 of them?
