Forsaking the Lord comes with a cost

Old Testament: 2Ch 12.9

To read the Bible in a year, read Second Chronicles 10–12 on June 3, In the year of our Lord Christ 2025

By Don Ruhl

Rehoboam, son of Solomon and grandson of David, forsook the Lord and the nation went along with it.

Therefore, the Lord sent the king of Egypt against Jerusalem, but the people repented and confessed the righteousness of the Lord.

Therefore, the Lord would not let Egypt destroy Jerusalem, but he did let Egypt have temporary dominion over Judah, as it is written, “So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and took away the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the king’s house; he took everything. He also carried away the gold shields which Solomon had made” (2 Chronicles 12.9).

When Israel left Egypt, they plunder the Egyptians by taking their gold, but when Israel turned from the Lord, he allowed the Egyptians to take gold from Israel!

So then, sometimes we still have to suffer for turning from the Lord, even if we have turned back to him. It is better just to remain loyal to him always.

Questions:

  • What else in addition to gold, did Shishak take?
  • What is the more common word that Egypt used to depict their kings?
