We have greater salvation than Israel had

New Testament: Hebrews 2.2–4

To read the Bible in a year, read Hebrews 2 on November 5, In the year of our Lord Christ 2025

By Don Ruhl

The writer of the Book of Hebrews warned that we must give careful attention to the word of God, so that we do not drift away from it. Then the writer made this point: “For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?” (Hebrews 2.2-4).

What angels spoke to Moses and the prophets proved to be true. However, the Lord himself came down, lived on the earth, and spoke his word. Those who heard him spoke his words and confirmed that they spoke his words by doing miracles, showing that what they did and what they spoke went together. Their miracles showed that they had the power of heaven. Therefore, their words were the power of heaven.

Questions from today’s reading and devotional:

  • If disobedience to the word of angels brought retribution, what happens if a Christian disobeys the word of the Lord?
  • By whose will did miracles happen?
