How the word profits us

New Testament: Hebrews 4.2

To read the Bible in a year, read Hebrews 4 on November 7, In the year of our Lord Christ 2025

By Don Ruhl

Why is it that most of the people who came out of Egypt lost their lives in the wilderness? The Book of Hebrews makes it plain that it was because they did not believe the Lord and so did not act on his word.

So, although they heard the word from Moses, something was missing: “For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it” (Hebrews 4.2).

We hear the word and mix it with faith, so that we trust in what the word says, that it is the word of God and that it is right.

That then moves us to do whatever the word says to do, knowing that doing such will profit us.

Questions from today’s reading and devotional:

  • Do you trust the word of God?
  • If not, why not?
