How Israel made the Lord go away from them

Old Testament: Ezekiel 8.5-6

To read the Bible in a year, read Ezekiel 7-9 on November 14, In the year of our Lord Christ 2025

By Don Ruhl

The Jews had made God jealous. It is as though they did it intentionally, because they put an image of an idol right in the entrance of the temple: “Then He said to me, ‘Son of man, lift your eyes now toward the north.’ So I lifted my eyes toward the north, and there, north of the altar gate, was this image of jealousy in the entrance. Furthermore He said to me, ‘Son of man, do you see what they are doing, the great abominations that the house of Israel commits here, to make Me go far away from My sanctuary? Now turn again, you will see greater abominations” (Ezekiel 8.5-6).

They did not know what they had done, although they should have, because the Lord had revealed through the Scriptures what he thought of idols.

Questions from today’s reading and devotional:

  • By what gate did Israel put the idol?
  • Do you realize what you have done when you have sinned?
